On Reflection - An ArtSpace Exhibition

Phillip Ayriss

The artist’s intention is to demonstrate the relationship of deterioration of machinery and the regrowth of the natural world that surrounds it. The vehicles become absorbed back into the earth from which they were originally mined.

This work comes from the artist’s fascination with engineering and ageing machinery combined with an interest in the way manmade objects exist in the natural environment and how they become environments. The artist’s work has been influenced by his previous working career as a car mechanic. Rust, oil and dirt leaks from the ageing relics in fields and hedgerows, while trees and flowers push their way through the gaping holes.

The intention of the work is to promote similar feelings and passions of the artist that can be experienced by the viewer, but if the viewer relates to the work differently, then in the artist’s mind, the work has succeeded. The subject matter might be misinterpreted as a statement of our throwaway society, which portrays a negative view. This is not true; the use of colour and the desire to capture the wonder, drama and romance makes the work a celebration of moments in time.
