On Reflection - An ArtSpace Exhibition

Kim Mason

I have done two studies in pencil, of Monte and Frosty who are both foals. My aim was to capture their body shape, personality and behaviour. In ‘The Embrace’, I have taken one step further by painting their senses of sight, touch and sound in the way they are likely to experience this. For example the rough stoney ground, the cool soft hug in the shade while seeing a crumpled piece of cloth on the ground. I felt it aplicable to use mixed media for this final piece.

I based my three pieces of work for the title, ‘On Reflection’ because the two foals reminds me of my childhood. Looking back, vividly, at the age of five, I remember that I have never felt so free, until I rode my friends horses, bobbing up and down on her muddy, grassy, green field. This reflective memory reminds me to be free like a horse and not to give in to my shyness.

I would like to thank Cath from Hurst Hill Farm for letting me draw her foals and ponies.
