On Reflection - An ArtSpace Exhibition

Erica Middleton

On Reflection.

a) The literal reflection due to the highly burnished gilding – in some paintings you can roughly see your own reflection which adds another dimension, both visually and conceptually
b) The contemplative – reflecting on the nature of domestic utensils

My highly personal paintings are like a visual diary. Recent work explores the nature of domestic utensils. I use pure pigments, making my own oil paints as these maximize high chroma contrast whilst facilitating a wide range of distinctiveness within the neutrals.
Much work involves areas of gilding, using 23 carat gold, silver and copper leaf. The work is multi-layered, alluding to symbolic connections. Formally the arrangements are important – balance and dynamism are aimed for through carefully placed objects in relation to each other and the surrounding space, plus colour and tonal relationships.
